VNXe3100 Disk Processor Enclosure (DPE) or Storage Processor Enclosure (SPE) enables VNXe3100 customers to keep pace with their growing businesses by expanding their system storage capacity. The VNXe3100's intuitive design easily allows you to add new disks that can be used to expand existing storage pools or create new pools. The VNXe3100 allows you to add any mix of SAS or NL-SAS to achieve certain storage capacities or performance metrics. As a unified storage system, data can be shared by SAN for applications and NAS for CIFS or NFS shares. The VNXe3100 is a high-performance, I/O dense, high-capacity storage system in a small 2U form factor.

The entry level VNXe3100 offers storage over an IP network. Designed for small to medium sized businesses the VNXe3100 supports iSCSI, CIFS and NFS protocols while keeping its form factor small. The VNXe3100 is also great for businesses with remote branch offices interested in consolidating storage of Exchange, VMware, Hyper-V and File Servers as well as for IT administrators that have no specific storage knowledge. The VNXe3100 provides a consolidated platform for provisioning, managing and monitoring application data storage within organizations and networks of all sizes. Each storage system provides highly efficient iSCSI block storage and highly accessible file-based storage for enabling users to work with files and data over network connections.

DELL EMC VNXe3100 Base Knowledge .
The Dell EMC VNXe3100 is a 2U Disk Processor Enclosure (DPE) that can support 12x 3.5” LFF Drives. This 2U DPE supports two types of disk drives in this system. The disk drives supported are Serial attached-SCSI (SAS) and near-line SAS (NL-SAS

The VNXe 3100 can have 1 or 2 Storage Processors (SP) installed in the rear. If only 1 SP is installed the second slot will have a hot-swap 1GB Cache Protection Module installed. This Cache Protection Module provides a mirrored VNXe OE Cache memory. If the VNXe3100 has 2 SP installed, then you're able to swap the 4x1GB ports for a 2x10GB Port on the SP. This option is only available with the 2 SP Configurations.

Each Storage Processor (SP) comes with a CPU module with an Intel Xeon Dual Core 1.73-GHz processor with two Double Data Rate Three (DDR3) synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) slots supporting 4 GB of memory per SP; an optional 8-GB memory upgrade for a dual SP configuration is available.

Disk Array Enclosure (DAE)
The Dell EMC VNXe 3100 storage can be expanded by connecting Disk-Array Enclosure (DAE). Either a 2U, 12 (3.5-inch) disk drive DAE or a 2U, 25 (2.5-inch) disk drive DAE. On a 1 SP configuration, the VNXe 3100 supports up to 3 DAE or up to 49 drives. In a dual SP system, VNXe3100 supports up to seven 2U, DAEs or a maximum of 96 (3.5-inch) drives.

The DAE has 2 x4 6Gb SAS ports that connect to an LCC. Which supports, controls, and monitors the DAE, and is the primary interconnect management element. Each LCC includes connectors for input and expansion to downstream devices.
